Experiment : Surviving without social media

As part of this module Shane advised us to take on experiments such as attempting to go a day or longer without using any form of social media. At first I thought this task would be impossible and so originally didn't think I could attempt it. However after my phone took a swim in a cup of tea I didn't really have a choice. At first I thought I could easily do this however as I went through my day to day routine I found it increasingly more difficult to cope without any form of social media. I didn't have any access to a phone and so didn't have any communication to anyone else. I found this a strange revelation, I had never noticed how not essentially having a square communication box in my back pocket would alter my day drastically. I didn't know where my friends were, what they were doing or who they with. Usually I could tell where many of my friends were with the use of medians like Whatsap, Snapchat, or Facebook. But now I was blind walking around UCD in the pure hope I would run into someone in whom I could latch onto for the day. It was strange walking through UCD I am usually distracted by my phone but now I had the chance to observe. Its actually incredible how many people are on there phones while walking, running, eating, drinking, and even just standing. I am usually one of those people but for this one day I wasn't. I actually quite liked not having my phone for the day, I found my day was so much more free and didn't have much of a routine, for one day I just went with the flow and didn't organize anything, didn't engage with other people via social media but only through face-to-face contact. I found the experience very interesting as you don't realize how much time is spent on your phone on a daily basis. I was only disconnected from the world of social media for a day and two nights but I did find a noticeable difference in my life.
